Environmental Performance Index

The Environmental Performance Index (EPI) is a composite index of national environmental protection, which tracks (1) environmental health, (2) air quality, (3) water resources, (4) biodiversity and habitat, (5) productive natural resources, and (6) sustainable energy. The index is a weighted average of these six policy categories, with more weight given environmental health, (i.e., EPI = 0.5 × environmental health + 0.1 × (air quality + water resources + productive natural resources + biodiversity and habitat + sustainable energy)). The index values range from 0 (very poor performance) to 100 (very good performance). The 2006 pilot EPI and 2008 EPI differ in several strucutural and substantive areas. As a result comparison berween both years are not appropriate.
