Human Poverty Index
The index measures deprivation in terms of not meeting target levels for specified economic and quality-of-life indicators. Values are based on (1) percentage of people not expected to survive to age 40, (2) percentage of adults who are illiterate, and (3) percentage of people who fail to attain a decent living standard, which is subdivided into three (equally weighted) separate items: (a) percentage of people without access to safe water, (b) percentage of people without access to health services, and (c) percentage of underweight children. The HPI ranges in value from 0 (zero deprivation incidence) to 100 (high deprivation incidence). http://hdr.undp.org/statistics/data/indicators.cfm?x=18&y=1&z=1 for most recent edition; updates may be found at http://hdr.undp.org/reports/view_reports.cfm?type=1
